Sarvodaya has taken leadership role in
establishing permanent peace, since the conflict began
in1983. In October 1983, Sarvodaya convened a major
conference where two thousands delegates representing
different communities, religious faiths, and political
affiliation came together to find a path to peace.
Over the last two decades, Sarvodaya
has organized several multi-ethnic community events, peace
marches, mass meditation and several other local and
community level events towards establishing peace in Sri
Lanka.
In 2002, Sarvodaya assembled 650,000 people in Anuradhapura,
a historical district in Sri Lanka, for peace meditation.
Sarvodaya's activities led to a cease-fire agreement between
the government and the LTTE later that year.
Sarvodaya's active role in peace
has been internationally recognized with its founder
Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne receiving
several international awards, including Niwano Peace Prize
1992, Gandhi Prize 1996, and Sushil Kumar International
Peace Award in 2006. |
