On the October 2, 2006 birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the ancient city of Anuradhapura is expected to host a 1 million people -the largest gathering in Sri Lanka’s history—in a meditation for peace called together by the Sarvodaya Movement. People throughout the world are invited to participate. The event will be broadcast live.

According to Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, founder-president of the Movement, the October 2 event is an attempt to transform the collective consciousness of humanity from greed to beneficence, from hatred to love, and from ignorance to enlightenment.

Since the recent escalation of violence in Sri Lanka, Sarvodaya has expanded its spiritually-based programs across the country. The process began with a meditation program in Trincomalee, where 10,000 Sri Lankans from different ethnic and religious communities took part.

Dr. Ariyaratne believes that a critical mass of spiritual consciousness can be created when over a million people join together in a spiritual process.

He said, “the objective of this event is not only to bring peace in the minds of people and in society, but also to bring about a dynamic equilibrium in our own planet and in the planetary system as a whole.” The critical mass can influence the consciousness of people through out the world towards inner peace.

As many as 15,000 villages are being mobilized for this event. Each village will form a team of ten people to coordinate daily individual meditation, weekly collective meditation and monthly mass meditation programs where over ten thousand people will participate. This community-level spiritual activity will continue through United Nations Peace Day on September 21st, 2006.

From September 21 to September 30, Sarvodaya villages will conduct community level dialogues focusing on issues related to the conflict in Sri Lanka and its peaceful resolution.

“We invite all people throughout the world to join us in meditation, either in their own community or here in Sri Lanka.”

Past meditations have clearly helped establish a context for reduction of violence and welcoming for peace. Following the precedents set by previous gatherings of 170,000, 350,000 and 650,000, the Anuradhapura event will attract thousands of busloads of pilgrims who may spend as much as 12-15 hours each way from their villages to the gathering. The nationwide Shanthi Sena Youth Peace Brigades will help marshal representatives of all of Sri Lanka’s religions and ethnic groups. The day will be filled with lectures and other activities related to peace and development.

Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith, the founder and spiritual director of Agape International, and President of the Association for Global New Thought will be speaking at the event.

As hosts, the residents of Anuradhapura will prepare by collecting donations of food and other materials for the participants from other parts of the country. They will need help.

The Price of Peace
Would you like to contribute to the success of this impressive event? Moving as much as 1/20th of the entire population of Sri Lanka can involve tremendous expense as well as tremendous potential benefit for the world. The more people who participate, the more profound the impact.

Sarvodaya may well be the only organization in the world which can mobilize such energy for this cause. Join us!
Your sponsorship of a busload, a village, a youth or elders’ group; of food or first aid for this event could make a major difference. $10 could sponsor a person or a family. $10,000 could help make it possible for hundreds of people to attend.
