International Day of Democracy

A message by Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne for International Day of Democracy –

Sarvodaya Grama Swaraj

Democracy Rooted in the Village

On the International Day of Democracy, we reflect on the importance of people’s voices, participation, and empowerment. For Sarvodaya, democracy is not only a system of government, but a way of life that begins in the smallest social unit; the village. This vision is called Grama Swaraj (village self-rule).

▫️What is Grama Swaraj?

Gramaswaraj is a philosophy introduced to Sri Lanka by Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne and the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement. It means that every village should have the freedom, resources, and capacity to govern itself and meet its own needs.

It is a holistic model of democracy where people collectively decide on priorities, share resources, and ensure that no one is left behind.

▫️Democracy Beyond Elections

While many see democracy only as voting once every few years, Grama Swaraj shows us that true democracy is lived daily in community decision-making, voluntary service (Shramadana), and collective responsibility. In a Grama Swaraj village, the community organizes itself through Sarvodaya Shramadana Societies, where men, women, youth, and elders participate equally in shaping their future.

▫️Linking Democracy with Human Needs

Sarvodaya frames democracy through the Ten Basic Human Needs: clean environment, safe water, clothing, food, shelter, energy, health, communication, education, culture, and spiritual development. When these needs are met through collective effort, people experience not only freedom but also dignity.

▫️Grama Swaraj in Action

Over the decades, Sarvodaya has helped establish village-level societies across thousands of communities in Sri Lanka. These societies:

* Manage microfinance programs,

* Organize disaster response,

* Resolve local conflicts,

* Support education and health initiatives, and

* Strengthen community bonds across ethnic and religious lines.

This is democracy at its most authentic, people coming together to govern their own lives.

▫️Why It Matters Today

At a time when democratic values are tested globally, Sarvodaya’s Grama Swaraj offers a timeless lesson, democracy is strongest when it grows from the grassroots. It is not only about rights, but also about responsibilities, compassion, and community care.

On this International Day of Democracy, we celebrate the spirit of Grama Swaraj; a vision where every village becomes a beacon of participatory democracy, peace, and human dignity…. 🌍
